Parts not in schematic that need to be in a BOM

When I was using Cadence Capture about 8 years ago at another company, we had the ability to add tables of parts to a design to allow us to add parts that were part of the BOM for design tracking purposes but not part of the schematic (e.g., documents). We could also (IIRC) overload properties on parts in the schematic when the correct part was not available in the parts database.

Flash forward to now, trying to do the same with OrCAD Design Entry CIS 16.6, and I am struggling with finding the correct approach for this. Has anyone else tried to do this and succeeded?
