Local Power bar for the Hierarchical Designs

Normally in circuit designs,we will use a power bar to indicate power source and it seems that the vcc_bar is the global one.

We have a design with lot of hierarchical schematics.As most of the the power nets used were 'vcc_bar',in the main schematic i came up with mess that the power net in one hierarchical schematic is shorted  to the power net in another hierarchical design.

For example,consider in a main schematic i have called two hierarchical blocks say block 1 and block2.
In block 1 hierarchical design,i have a 3.3V regulator and i have named the output of 3.3V regulator as "P3V3" and in block2 which uses different 3.3V regulator and the output i named as same P3V3.
I know i shouldn't named with same global net names. But we are deigning many reuse modules  like the hierarchical designs and in each design they maintain their individual power names but i think it shouldn't mess up with the main design as well as other hierarchical designs.

My question is that whether 'vcc_bar' power can be declared as local and can be used within the schematic.We don't want off page connectors to connect the powers within the schematic.

If any other option to overcome this issue,please suggest us.

.dxf file layers missing when attempting to import into PCB Editor

I'm using OrCAD PCB editor 16.5 and am trying to import a .dxf (image for silkscreen) for the first time, but can not get it to work.

The image is vector based and has been exported from Adobe Ilustrator directly as a .dxf file.

I open the .dxf import dialogue and browse and select the file I'd like to import, and click 'incremental addition'.  OrCAD gives the accuracy mistmatch warning and I click 'Yes'.  

The problem is that when I open the 'Edit/View Layers...' dialogue there are no layers visible to map.  I therefore can not import anything into OrCAD.  I have opened the .dxf file in a third party viewer and can view the image in that and it shows it as a single layer.  I have tried almost everything import setting in OrCAD and export setting in illustrator.

Does anyone know what might be causing OrCAD not to be ableto see these layers?  Any suggestions on how to get this to work? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Environment path varibles the function keys are not working?

Hi... suddenly the three keys are not working in the allegro PCB editor env. So can anyone help me how to edit the files specified in the env path. Tell me briefly how to edit the env path editor and how to link it with the Allegro PCB editor. The Function keys are Zoom in (i), Zoom fit(f), Slide (f3), these keys are independently assigned edited in env file. But suddenly today morning onwards this keys are not working. I tried to find and fix it in CM (Constraint Manager). However, I only saw it in the DRC -> Spacing section which is Read-Only and doesn't change. Does anybody know how I can fix this issue?

OVAL OBLONG DRILL SLOT NC-ROUTE

Hi, 

I am trying to find a way for producing oblong drill holes. Even if I design an oblong pad and then create the artwork files, i cant read the nc-route file in CAM350 and oblong drills dont apeear on drill layer file(.drl). I exported OBD++ file but I need to obtain .art files for PCB house. Is there a way to produce oval drills or convert OBD++ files into .art files?

OrCAD Capture 16.3 hangs on load

My OrCAD Capture 16.3 just quit working. When I load the program, I first see the version and copyright splash screen in the center of my primary monitor. Less than one second later, The main window begins to appear on my secondary monitor. With no delay, and perhaps before the main window appears, one of my dual core processor cores goes to 100% CPU usage (overall 50% CPU usage) and stays there. Meanwhile, the main window, which was only title bar and frame with old graphics still in the middle, repaints with all white and stays all white. A small "Footprint Viewer" window also appears with all white body.

During all of this, if I move the task manager around on the two white windows, they do repaint. At least, their frames do. One couldn't tell if the white repaints. However, the splash screen on the other monitor is still up, and it does NOT repaint as I move the task manager across the face of it.

*Immediately* prior to this problem, I was running OrCAD Capture CIS, which I had run many times since it was installed over a month ago. I tried to generate a netlist, and got an error about invalid characters in the path. I closed the current project, and tried to rename the folder tree containing the project. Windows Explorer couldn't rename because some file in the tree was locked by some program. I believe OrCAD PCB Editor was also running. I closed both OrCAD programs and tried to rename again. I still couldn't rename. I decided to leave the folder names as they were, and created a new folder with a short name and no special chars. Then, I loaded OrCAD Capture again and had this problem.

OrCAD Capture should NOT be automatically opening my project or anything, and I did NOT in the end rename anything. Therefore, my actions shouldn't have led to a condition causing this hang. The closest connection at all is the MRU (most recently used list). But since I didn't actually rename anything, that shouldn't be a cause, either.

I have no clue why the program suddenly started doing this.

Note that when I cancel it by either clicking on the red X in the top right corner, or cancelling it with the task manager, it does take a few seconds but otherwise cancels willingly. It's not like some other programs when they hang, where you get the question about the task not ending and cancelling it now.

Also, two line items appear in the Applications tab of the task manager, both for OrCAD Capture with status "Not Responding".

Any and all reasonable advice on this is greatly appreciated. Note that I have tried rebooting and loading with no other programs working. I have not yet tried to reinstall.

Drill hole merging is not get updated in the drill chart?

Hi..

I want to produce the drill chart for the my design. But when i am try to create the drill chart, the drill sizes are not in the same size. So that i have  only option i had tried is to locate the pad that uses the odd size drill and use Tools - Padsatck - Modify Design Padstack and then edit the pad to change the drill size. Once modified use File - Update to design and exit and the drill diameter is changed. In the Customization section th symbol X & Y are been give the same size of symbol.

After specifying the symbol, i done the merge option that to merge symbols. But that option also not yet get updated in the drill chart. So i attached the file that to specify the error what i had done.

ERROR(ORCAP-19005) Viewer was not found.

Hi, I am novice please help me. 

When I have already an "ORCAD Capture" opened, and when I want to open also "OrCAD Capture View-Only",  I get this error message:   ERROR(ORCAP-19005) c:-\ viewer was not found.

But if I close OrCAD Capture, then I can open OrCAD Capture VIEW-Only.

I wonder is it only me, or it is normal....you cannot open a second Capture application, when one is already opened??

How to export to ASCII format?

Hi,

I am using Orcad PCB editor 16.2. If need to import Orcad design file in PADs software, then I need ASCII format designs. How to export *.BRD file in to ASCII format. I couln't find any option to export to ASCII.

Our custome board manufacturer is asking about  ASCII format design file since he is unable to read *.brd file.


Let me know some hints...

Board Outline compose error

Hi,

I am designing a new baod Allegro 16.6. When I try to compose the Outline subclass of Borad Outline I see below message without any effect on board corners. I can't compose Route Keepin nor Package Keepi.

W- (SPMHIS-473): 1 selected items completely overlapped with segments from other selected items and have been filtered.

I would really appreciate any help on this issue,

Drill hole tolerance issue

 Hi everyone,

In most fab house, they asking tolerance +/-3mils for via (PTH) fabrication. But my doubt is, for 12x24 power via, if hole size becomes 12+3=15mils, there is no issues for current flowing. But if hole size becomes 12-3=9mils, the current capacity will reduces and if might be fatal for design. How to overcome this issue?

Any inputs will be greatly appreciated.

Creating Netlist

I have made a schematic and have add the Footprints to all components, and ran the Design Rules Check, with no errors. 
However when I want to "Create Netlist" I get the following error: 
 
Unable to  open D:\Cadence\PSD_10.0\tools\capture\allegro.cfg for reading.
Please correct the above error(s) to proceed
 
 
I have googled - found no solution, and changed the folder directory of my project also but still no sucess.... Please someone help me.

Creating a new model

 Hi,

I wanted to use a new model transistor in my design. I created a new model by using the parameters provided my MOSIS following the procedure in

In Allegro Design Entry CIS, I generated the part and finally I tried placing the new part by typing in the name in "Place Part" field in Allegro Design Entry CIS.

But it shows error, "Could not find Design cache(file location)".

Could anyone help to get this error fixed?

Please, please, please follow the instructions fully when installing. They are at the top of the Skill file and also here:

Download and install the precompiled potrace release suitable for your platform:
  http://potrace.sourceforge.net/download
 set the POTRACE_PATH environment variable to the path to the executable
  eg. C:\utils\potrace

 Download and install the precompiled ImageMagick release suitable for your platform
 This may not be necessary if you use Linux as ImageMagick is often included in Linux installations:
  http://www.imagemagick.org/script/binary-releases.php
  eg. http://www.imagemagick.org/download/binaries/ImageMagick-6.5.3-Q16-windows.zip
 If the path to the ImageMagick convert.exe file is not in your system path then set the MAGICK_HOME
 environment variable to the path to the convert executable. (Run "convert -version" in a system shell to test).
  eg. C:\utils\ImageMagick\ImageMagick-6.5.1-3

 Install logoMaker_public.il into your skill folder.
 Add load("logoMaker_public.il") to the allegro.ilinit file in your pcbenv folder.

X over pad in PCB editor

 Hi Guys,

I've only been using ORCAD for about 2 months now, so I'm sure this is a silly problem. I seem to have an issue with one of my nets - I am getting an"x" over all of the pads in the net and not a single component appears to get associate with that net. I have attached a screenshot of a portion of my schematic and layout, and can attach more/provide more information if needed.

Capture CIS_Show Footprint

Can someone explain how I can set the correct paths for my symbol library so that I can view footprints inside capture. I have set the psmpath to the folder where my .psm and .dra files are located in the environment editor. However, when I select my part and choose show footprint I get an error stating allegro footprint not found in search path or something to that nature. However, if I use a symbol from the discrete capture library like a resistor and then select a footprint located in the cadence/..../share/pcb/pcb_lib/symbols folder it works. Are my libraries not set correctly even though I can place parts manually in pcb editor or is their something else I am missing. Thank you
