Placing from Capture To Editor

$

I have noticed that when placing a symbol in Editor from Capture, when the part is selected in Capture it is placed on my cursor in Editor, but zoomed in to the point I can't see where I'm going with it. At this point I try to use my mouse wheel to zoom out, or the keyboard commands I have set for zooming and neither work. I have to release the part, zoom out, then pick the part in Editor again and continue with the placement.

Still using latest 16.5, if that matters.

How do I stop all the schematic sheets opening, when I open a schematic file.

This is in orcad 16.3

Is it possible to have a separate owner for each schematic sheet. So that only one person is able to edit/make changes.

This question is related to multiple engineers working on a schematic?

How do multiple engineers update/edit the schmeatic.

Is there a version control with diff available ?

Reg: OFFSET GRID MOVEMENT OF PARTS IN ALLEGRO16.6

Hi,

In Allegro 16.6 while moving components its not jumping between grids giving smooth movement regardless of grid then after placing quickly
aligning to near by grid . Is there any setting I need to do for movement of components as it was in 16.3 ?
eg for more clarity : I have set 39.37mil grid to place same pith BGA ,but while moving BGA , its pad not picking grids showing smooth offset grid movement

Library conversion using 16.6

I just updated to 16.6 yesterday. (latest ISR also)

Today I went to convert some of my old Layout parts using the exact same process I have used before. I now get errors. I can see the parts in 16.6 but when I export them to a library I get the following log file output:

*** Creating all device files (see create_devices.log) ***
  *** Creating padstacks. ***

  DIN_LLB_PAD1 being dumped.

  DIN_LLB_PAD2 being dumped.

  DIN_LLB_PAD3 being dumped.

  DIN_LLB_PAD4 being dumped.

  DIN_LLB_HOLE1 being dumped.

  SM_LLB_PAD25_1 being dumped.
*** Creating package symbols (.dra and .psm) ***

  smc2220 being dumped.

ERROR: For symbol Symbol Definition "Smc2220", SM_LLB_PAD25_1 padstack not found . Pin not added.
ERROR: For symbol Symbol Definition "Smc2220", SM_LLB_PAD25_1 padstack not found . Pin not added.
  conn_din_96pin_ra being dumped.

  conn_din_96pin_vert being dumped.

*********************** Summary *********************
ERRORs reported:                           2

Number of padstacks dumped:                6
Number of package symbols dumped:          3

Total number of symbols dumped:            3
*****************************************************

The interesting part is that the padstacks are made as is the symbol, but the symbol contains no padstacks.

Is this a new feature in 16.6?

PS: I probably could have remade the parts in less time then I have spent trying to figure it out...........

Cross section tool and impedance calculations

I ran into something the other day and have been working with tech support on, but thought I might get some answers here.

Four layer board, two inner layers set to planes (and shield) FR4 material.

In the Setup - cross section tool, when I try to calculate the trace width based on a given impedance and stack up, the impedance is always 60 ohms. For example, I open the cross section tool and select Show Single Impedance.  The default impedance shows as 60 ohms. If I try to change it to 50 ohms by manually editing the cell, it resets to 60 as soon as I click out of the cell.

If I try to change it by using the drop down boxes at the bottom of the window; Layer Type - Conductor; Material 1oz cu; Field set to - Impedance; Value Set to - 50; then select "Update Fields", nothing happens.

We tried multiple things yesterday. I even sent the board file to tech support and it works just fine for them (figures.....)

I tried it on a different computer at my home office and the impedance is displayed in exponential format, not in ohms.

A couple of screen shots:

Copper shape not connecting to pads

I want to connect two components using a copper shape. The respective component pins are the same net and reside on the top etch.

I create my shape on the top etch overlapping the two pins and assign it the net name of the pins. The shape accepts the net name, but will not "flood" the pads as I was expecting it to do.

Thoughts?

Hi..

I was using the Allegro PCB Editor(OrCAD 16.0). In that all components are in same side.So only i had asked that doubt to change the component top to bottom.

This Option is been not enabled in my Edit -> Move and then click the RMB and mirror the component.

  What is RMB ?

Send the details clearly.

Changing grid size

I am trying to place two differential signal lines close together, 8 mils between them. But due to the spacings between the grid points I cant measure the distance between the two traces accurately enough. Is there a way to make the grid size smaller?

High(er) current and thermal reliefs - design philosophy

$

Hypothetical question, but somewhat relative to a project I'm working on:

Suppose you have a design where a trace needs to carry 25 amps DC at 24 volts. This trace interfaces two components. One, a high current MOSFET and the other a surface mount fuse. The connection between the two is very short, on the order of 0.25" or so and will be made using 2oz cu. The trace width is smaller then the tab of the FET, but much larger then the pad of the surface mount fuse.

I have done many circuits like this in the past and have made the connetcion to both components a solid, flooded copper connection, usually tapered down to the size of the smaller pad. There have been no issues with soldering either part.

I have been discussing a new design where it has been suggested to use a thermal relief connection to the fuse to aid in soldering. I don't particulary like this approach due to the amount of current involved having to go through the smaller traces of the thermal relief. I suppose it may be possible to size the width of the relief traces such that the sum of their widths comes close to the required trace width, but I don't know if the pad is big enough to support the big relief trace.

I'd be curious to hear others philosophies on using thermal reliefs in high current situations.

offset lines

I came across a tool within Allegro a while ago that illustrated the use of a command that allowed a user to draw a series of contiguous lines (not Clines) with a uniform spacing.  I can't seem to find this tool again.  Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Hi..

In Allegro PCB Editor (OrCAD 16.0), when i was clicking an component or any routed via means, I have to scroll middle mouse button on window to  view that component or routed via.In same manner that any net i click means same problem occurs. So there is any way to change setting that when i click an component or other means, i have to view or move that selected item in when the single clicking execution.Same for component moving and mirror too.

So anyone provide me the solution to this.!!!!!

Importing Image/Logo To Existing Design OrCAD PCB Designer 16.5

$

I've seen this question asked a few times before, but I still need some help.  Basically, I want to put my company's logo on my PCBs.  Sometimes, I want the logo to be on one of the silkscreen layers, other times, I want it to be on one of the copper layers.  I've used other layout software where this was a super-simple task, but not so with OrCAD PCB Designer.

(ARE YOU LISTENING, CADENCE/ORCAD?  MAKE THIS EASIER AND/OR MORE INTUITIVE TO DO!  IF CHEAP $800 SOFTWARE CAN IMPORT A JPEG WITH ONE MOUSE CLICK, WHY CAN'T YOU?)

Anyway, I digress.  What I've managed to do so far is convert the company logo to a DXF using another piece of software.  I can import the DXF to any layer I want using the FILE>IMPORT>DXF commands from the upper menu.  Here's where the problem comes in - If I try to do this in an existing design, OrCAD erases the entire design and replaces it with the logo.  I've read the HELP files about importing a DXF into an existing design using the dxf2a command, but I can't get this to do anything other than to beep at me incessantly and give me error messages that I don't understand.  I've seen other posts about SKILL files that can create/import the logo for me, but I haven't been able to get any of those things to work, either.  Apparently, I need to be a computer programmer to get the dxf2a command or any of the SKILL files to work, so I'm screwed.

So, does anybody have a method to import a dxf SUCCESSFULLY into an existing design that I can understand?  I'm pretty well frustrated with this at this point.  It seems to me that there are so many little secret, hidden features to OrCAD that aren't documented, or documented in such a way as to insure that no human being could use those features.  Just last week, I had to have a 45 minute conversation with tech support about how to imbed two vias in a ground slug on a voltage regulator chip.  This week, I'm trying to figure out the logo thing.

Sorry for the rant.  I just don't think it should be this difficult.  Why can't they just have an IMPORT>IMAGE option with, oh, I don't know, maybe an "ADD TO EXISTING DESIGN" or "CREATE NEW DESIGN" button?

Changing the grid size in Allegro PCB Editor

$

Hi,

All of our projects are been put in (mm) dimensions only.In PCB Editor me had kept the grid size as 2.54(mm) initially. Then after some referred on line books i divide the value by 2 (i.e).,2.54/2=1.27(mm). If i kept this means i have to zoom the components by too inner. Its create me put the manual routing problem in editor.

So can provide the solution that what is grid size want to kept in editor.
