Capture CIS Lite 17.2 issue: "ERROR(ORCIS-6016)" on save

Today, I installed  Orcad Lite 17.2 on my Windows 10 notebook for the first time.

When I launch OrCAD Capture CIS - Lite (version 17.2-2016) and create a new project, I can not save it  (although it's an emtpy project). Instead I get a strange error message.

These are the exact steps to reproduce this issue:

- Launch Capture CIS Lite

- New Project  - PSpice Analog or Mixed A/D

- Create PSpice Project - blank project

- Save

Then I get the following error window:

"ERROR(ORCIS-6016): Data Source BenchAccess172D not found. The selected part management configuration requires this data source name.

To create the data source or change the data source name, go to the Control Panel and click the ODBC icon."

Has anyone else seen this error? Please advise!

I only wanted to walk through the tutorial available here but I can not even save an empty project. My installation seems broken although I installed OrCAD lite for the first time. Is it because I'm not running the program with administrator privileges? I don't think so. The days where programs had to be run as administrator to work are long gone, right?

Thanks

Dan

Title jumps in schematic titleblock when opened on another computer

Hi,

When using OrCAD Capture, the title is aligned in the titleblock using the <Title> property. Our .DSN and .opj are shared and controlled using version control software. When another user opens the project, some of the titleblock properties jump around the page and are no longer aligned properly in the titleblock, and need to be moved manually.

Does anyone have any idea why this might be happening and how to remedy the situation?

Thanks

In one user PC with OrCAD 17.2 (having latest ISR28) when he chooses File-Export PDF, the tool crashes(before opening PDF Export window) with message as "the application has quit unexpectedly" .

Tried renaming home variable from 17.2.0 . The OrCAD PS_17.2 driver is installed in printers. What might be the reason for the crash.

Issue happening across all designs.

'Available Part Properties' in part manager, and sorting by hierarchical occurance in PM

Hi,

I am wondering how to get a property into the 'available part properties' list when using Part Managers 'configure part properties display'. My end goal is to sort all the common parts by Page occurance. PM defaults to display the schematic, however this does not differentiate between occurances of the schematic when using hierarchical blocks. I tried to create a property for the design by RMB>Edit Object Properties on the .dsn and adding a new property, which I was going to use to differentiate the occurances, however this property is not available int the 'available part properties' list.

Please let me know if you have advice.
Thanks
Jeff

Finding symbol and footprint library

I have just completed the E-learning course and now getting started on a new design.

Can someone point me to where the starter library should be on my C:\drive.

I would have selected the default location during the installation of Allegro Pcb Editor.

better Free Allegro Viewer - Orcad Lite

Since Engineers need a way to view allegro board files.
And the Orcad Lite has more functionality , why not use that.

my blog at robspcb.com/blog/

Pcb Designers and Engineers need to be able to view the same database.
So , those Viewers that don't chew up a license, are a great deal.
The regular Viewer is really limited in functionality , thats where Orcad Lite comes in to serve as a Viewer.
Of Course there are a couple of install caveats.
One of them, if you already have a license, it would use that up.
Made a  Batch .bat file as a workaround, that way you can have multiple lite open.

Steps:
- download Orcad lite
- create shortcut on Desktop
- download PCBeditorlite_no_license.bat
- put on Desktop

Reliable 1206 and 0603 footprints

Hello,

I am trying to design a board with 1206 capacitors and 0603 resistors (SMD types both, of course).

From <path>\SPB_17.2\share\pcb\pcb_lib\symbols I have tried to use as a basis the 0603rf_wv_12d.dra and 1206rf_wv_12d.dra but as I can these are overloaded with too much text and even vias (?!). Should I use these and edit them to the minimal working configuration? Also in the same folder we can find the 1206.dra -a much more simplified one.

In general I have found some free footprints from Snapeda website and this one.

These do not seem to be the working fine or even after being DBdoctor'ed I get some errors

( e.g. E- (SPMHDB-181): Design revision 15.x is too old. Must run the batch dbdoctor to uprev.)

A last way out would be using the procedures described in K.Mitnzner's book  (Chapter8-p.213) and create a new one (by editing an existing one) - though I tried and found this to be the hardest one (I got stuck while Manipulating the assembly outline).

Since I feel I am in a dead end (Allegro's complexity should not be underestimated especially for beginners as me :-) ) are there any suggestions on how to overcome this critical point?!

As pointed in the title what would be the most reliable footprint basis to (re)start with?

I would appreciate any help!

Thanks in advance,

Andreas

Hi,

I am using SPB 17.2 and in constraints manager we have defined some custom properties, i would like to know if there is a way to set default values of some properties based on some logic.

Say for some nets i want to define the minimum line width to some default value.

Apply thermal relief in PCB Editor on single pin

Hello,

Is there an easy way to assign a thermal relief to a single pin (not an entire net) in PCB Editor? I know you can edit the thermal reliefs globally and per dynamic shape (net) but I cannot find a way to accomplish this per pin. Any advice?

Thx,

Read Only library problem with OrCAD 17.2.029

Hi all,

I have a weird problem with Orcad 17.2 that i just installed (with latest hotfix). When i open an old design that i had made with OrCAD 16.6, it says that my library file is used by another user and it has to be opened in readonly mode.

Every time i have to remove the library and re-add it to work with it. And i can guaranty that i am the only user of this library file. No one else uses it and it is not on a shared folder or anything like that.

Is there a way to see who OrCAD thinks is using the file?

Thanks,

Hi at all,

I try to create a new package for MP2229  (MPS).

I tried to create a shape and used this shape in Pad Designer. Problem what I see: This pad has the numbers 1, 12, 13 and 14.

Is there a got solution to create a correct pad with correct numbering? I use PCB Designer 16.6. Thanks for help!

OrCAD Capture - Synchronize up on hierarchical part deletes new ports

$

Hello all,

I'm working on a schematic that has a lot of hierarchical blocks.  I've never messed with hierarchical blocks before in Capture so I might be missing something obvious.  I need to update one of these blocks but I'm running in to trouble when trying to synchronize the hierarchical block after I make change to it.  For example say I have a hierarchical block with a port named 'CS'.  I want to rename this port 'CS1' so I go to the schematic page and rename the port.  When I go to the hierarchical block, right click, and select 'Synchronize up' it will delete the 'CS' port but it doesn't add a 'CS1' port.  In the session log it says:

Synchronize Up - Results
Source: SCHEMATIC:Voting_CC_MISC
INFO(ORCAP-2287): FAILED TO ADD: PORT: CS1, HBLOCK: Voting_CC_MISC - PAGE: TOP LEVEL - SCHEMATIC: SCHEMATIC1
INFO(ORCAP-2257): REASON: Unable to add due to space constraint at X: 0 - Y: 100
********** End of Results **********

I'm not exactly sure what this means.  It sounds like it's having trouble placing something.  I've tried resizing the box and various other things but none of those fixed this.  Does anyone know how to resolve this?

Thank you,

Dylan

cannot see ( ok, cance, apply) on quick place window.

I am using Orcad pcb professional 16.6 as well as 17.2. when i go to quickplace in 16.6, i am able to see the full window. But when i go to quickplace in 17.2, i am not able to see the "ok", " cancel", and "apply" buttons.

My screen resolution is set to 1366x768. This happens in few of the systems. But in one system when i open quickplace in 17.2 and hover the mouse to bottom of quickplace window, it will scroll the window and the "ok" "cancel" "apply" buttons will be visible. When i hover the mouse in my system, it doesn't scroll down. Is there any settings which has to changed or enabled for scrolling the window. Please help me on this issue.

To be clear, all the screens are set to same resolution. The same issue arises when i open "step package mapping".

I have attached the screenshots of both 16.6 and 17.2 in a single pdf .

Capture - Copy and paste does not generate new refdes

$

Hello everyone,

I'm working on a schematic and I would like to copy one page of parts and paste it on another.  When I do this some parts aren't assigned a new refdes.  Instead I get something like 'U?'.  Even telling Capture to annotate that page doesn't give it a refdes.  Oddly enough some parts can be copied and pasted and get a new refdes.  I've gone into the presences and set 'Automatically reference placed parts' and 'Design level(Only PCB designs)'.

I inherited this design from another engineer and I notice something odd when I go into the part properties.  I get the normal stuff but then there is an extra bar of information below that that is highlighted in yellow.  I don't know what this means but I notice that the refdes for one is U? and the other is U11.  Maybe this has something to do with it?  Thank  you for any suggestions!

Thanks,

Dylan

Using Split Parts - Allegro Design Entry HDL 16.6

$

I'm familiar with OrCAD Capture 15.7 from a previous job, where creating heterogeneous parts was simple, and placing them on a schematic was no issue. Now, at a new employer, Design Entry HDL is used. There is an extensive library developed at this new position, and I would like to use a part with three symbols, however I can not figure out how to place each individual symbol (3x32 connector, each row of pins is a separate symbol of the part: Symbol1 is A1-A32, Symbol 2 is B1-B32, etc.)

After exploring the help documentation and tutorials, I still can not figure out a way to place this schematic so that I see J1A, J1B, J1C as I would in OrCAD Capture. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

What's the problem of my custom PCB design using a CC1310 radio?

$

0

I have designed a custom PCB using a CC1310 radio, based on the reference design for the CC1310 LaunchPad(datasheet).

The uC is programming, and running code, when I attempt to send data through the radio, the software reports a successful transmit, but I am not able to get any data received from my LaunchPad, which I have programmed as the receiver.

I'm really not an RF expert, but I positioned the RF front end components as similarly as possible to those on the reference design, and requested that the board stackup be the same as that from the reference design.

After re-reviewing the BOM, I realise that for C21 in the reference schematic, the capacitor that connects RX_TX to ground, I requested a 0.1uF instead of a 100pF capacitor. I guess that will have a pretty severe impact.

I also realise that when providing my manufacturer with a BOM, I only specified the part type and value, e.g. Inductor 7.5nH, but I now see that in the TI BOM, there is much more detail, specifying RF inductor, non-magnetic core.

Please can someone tell me which components in the RF front end are likely to be the culprit of my non-functional radio? I don't mind re-soldering the whole front end if needs be, but I'd like to only change the parts that I need.

Which are the most likely causes of my problem? What can I do to get it working? and how much can I test this, all I have is a scope.

Addition: I used SmartRF Studio to set my custom board into continuous Tx mode, and to set a LaunchPad for continuous Rx. With ~1m seperation, the receiver was seeing between -35dBm and -60dBm, and then when I powered the Tx down, the Rx dropped to -100dBm. This means the custom board is transmitting something. Does this provide any extra insight?

Addition: I have tested two custom PCBs trying to communicate with each other, and they work. Using custom boards with SmatRF Studio, I get a much more stable RSSI of ~-20dBm, as shown

So, I know that the custom boards are functional, but will not communicate with a COTS development board.

I used a Software Defined Radio (SDR) dongle as a spectrum analyser, and tested the results of the LaunchPad transmitting, and the custom board, and here are my results.

LaunchPad as Tx

Custom PCB as Tx

I have tried swapping the incorrect value capacitor C21 for one of the correct value, and it makes virtually no difference to the results.

My only thought on what to do next is to change the other components in the front-end to more closely match that in the BOM.

Please can someone explain the reason for the behaviour I have seen, and provide some information about the difference between the custom PCB and the LaunchPad based on the graphs above?

Anything to improve my understanding would be greatly appreciated.

Addition:

Now I've figured out how to work my SDR, here is a better resolution graph for each device.

The LaunchPad seems to peak at ~867.935MHz:

Where as my custom boards seem to be more at ~868.053MHz

So whatever I have done has caused a sufficient difference in frequency. Is this really likely to be from the RF front end, or is it likely to be from something else? E.g. The oscillator being slightly off, the PCB copper being slightly different? Small differences in stack up?

I didn't think that a discrete Balun could shift frequency, am I wrong? Can the matching circuitry after the Balun cause a frequency shift? What is likely to be responsible for this?

Many Thanks.

Help on a simple component symbol definition in PCB Librarian Part Developer

$

Hello everybody,

I am trying to define a new part in Part Developer within Allegro PCB Librarian XL and I have two questions. I really appreciate any help and guidance you could provide!

QUESTION #1:

I'm defining different symbols for my part, so that either manually or through scripts (scr) a specific symbol can be chosen. This is how the Symbols tree structure looks like (please refer to screenshot below) - let's assume I'd like to define four symbols in total. The question is: if I try to rename them, the environment returns the following error: "The symbol cannot be renamed because the specified name is invalid. Reenter the name in the format sym_n, where n is a non-zero positive integer.". Is there any way to make a successful renaming? I have seen screenshots of tutorials online for Part Developer with symbols actually having names different than just sym_n.

QUESTION 2:

For another component I am defining, I would like the component's general structure to look like the following:

Basically, a very simple port consisting of a single symbol pin (with a name "B" and a Text "A") and a property which is a text (this wil act as a netlist, labeled as "C" in the picture above).

The question is the following: is it possible to define such component in a way that its properties can be modified as follows during the insertion in a cpm project (done either manually through "Add Component" or through a *.scr file execution)?

  • The "A" label can be changed (that is, the Text associated to the symbol pin)
  • "C" can be changed --> this is working for me, I can simply define it either if I add the component manually in a cpm project or if I add it through a script file;
  • The orientation (rotation) of the whole structure can be changed. For example, mirrored or rotated, implying that the whole symbol adapts to the rotation. In the two screens below I mentioned to examples of this.
  • So far I achieved all of this by defining different symbols of the same component, while I'd like to have just one symbol and change the properties I just mentioned "on the file" when the component needs to be added into the schematics.

Thank you!

Paolo

DSNLck lock files not working after several hours

$

When a user opens a DSN file in Orcad 16.6 (with 101 hotfix), a DSNLCK file is created so that anyone else trying to open the same file gets a warning and can only do read-only mode. There is an issue where if a user has a design open for several hours or overnight, the DSNLCK file might as well not exist, because anyone can open and edit the design that they already have open. According to server logs, the additional user's PC deletes the previous DSNLCK file and creates their own.

Has anyone else seen this behavior? Any idea what could be going on or how to fix? I'm at a loss for how to troubleshoot this, as the server logs seem to point to Orcad having a mind of it's own on if it wants to obey DSNLCK files or delete them.

Purpose of "Plan" class

I've searched through the documentation for PCB editor but can't find any information on the "Plan" class. Can anyone point me to the documentation or provide a description of this class? My intuition says it is for generic PCB floor planning.
